SunBlox™ Announces Approved Vendor Status for Orange County and State of Florida

Orlando, Florida – 2:30 PM February 2, 2008

SunBlox, Inc. (www.sunbloxsolarscreens.com) as seen on WKMG Local 6 News - The Problem Solvers (www.youtube.com/sunblox) has been approved as a vendor for both Orange County and for the State of Florida, enabling government entities under their jurisdiction to install an affordable product that reduces heat absorption through windows by up to 90%, resulting in energy cost savings of up to 30% in the Florida market. The Orlando-based company installs a product already popular in such hot spots as California, Texas, and Arizona, where utility companies frequently offer incentives for the installation and use of Solar Screens which significantly reduces energy consumption for cooling homes and offices (http://www.cityofdavis.org/yeep/sunscreens.cfm). Progress Energy currently recommends this product, and SunBlox™ was used as a technical consultant to help write their Solar Screen Incentive Program.

Keith Freeman, founder and owner of SunBlox™, states “The cost is relatively meager considering the estimated return on investment is just two years (or less) of use and in four years should double their money back.” He added, “This is a green product (given our nation’s current climate changes and global warming) that could have significant impact on the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) if broadly installed.” See the following articles and web sites for more information:

Sun Screens work by stopping the sun’s rays before they hit the glass (Sun hitting glass will produce about 230 BTU’s per square foot of glass) – this is how heat gain in the room is reduced. The U.S. Department of Energy says in a study that shading the outside of exposed windows or doors is the best way to stop heat build-up (http://www.eere.energy.gov). The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Clearinghouse says that roughly 50% of heat gain and heat loss is through windows and doors inside of your home. External shading is the most effective home treatment to counter these effects. Shading the exposed windows and doors with sun screens can reduce room temperatures by as much as 20 degrees.

Other products have drawbacks: window film or window tints cannot be removed, sometimes bubble up in the heat and will most likely void window manufacturers warranties; interior solar window shadings such as indoor window film or blinds or insulated drapes do not block, reflect or absorb the solar rays before they pass through the glass, allowing heat build-up and uncomfortable room temperatures.

SunBlox Solar Screens block sunlight before it hits windows and enters the building. By blocking up to 90% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, Sun Screens reduce temperatures in rooms by as much as 20 degrees, providing you with savings of up to 25% -30% on summer cooling bills. They allow ventilation and privacy and act as insect screens too. Sun Screens can be easily removed for the winter months.

  • Founder Keith Freeman relocated to Central Florida in the summer of 1997 from California by way of Hawaii. As a Quality Assurance manager for the Department of Defense for a decade, and a custom homebuilder for as long, Keith is entirely familiar with energy conservation products utilized in the west. He found it amazing that he could not find the product locally. He was able to source a small quantity of the screen material via special order, but not the special framing material or hardware, and nobody knew how to fabricate or install the solar screens. This was the catalyst for starting SunBlox™.

After a great deal of research, acquiring the best product from limited suppliers in the southeast U.S., Keith opened shop in 2005. He has since become members of the Florida Green Building Coalition, the Global Green Alliance, and joined the West Orange Chamber of Commerce (FL).

Certainly, if people knew the savings potential in their monthly electric bills, the extended life of their A/C system, as well as enhanced comfort of their homes, it would become a standard in all Florida homes.

SunBlox™ Solar Screens also have many commercial applications.

Several shading fabrics of this sun control product offer varying degrees of heat reduction and privacy.

NCG Medical Building

On February 2, 2008 SunBlox completed the installation of solar screens on the NCG Medical Building in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The owner of the commercial office property stated that all of his tenants on the 2nd floor has complained about the heat gain through the windows. We performed a temperature check with a laser thermometer on the windows prior to installing solar screens and after installation - the temperature of the glass dropped by as much as 20+ degrees Fahrenheit. The season is winter, and this proved to be a substantial drop in just the first few days of February. Historically, we know from other temperature checks in residential and commercial properties that the temperature drop is far more substantial in the summer months - as much as 40 degrees Fahrenheit temperature drop is common!

The owner said that the heat gain problem on the first floor offices is not as prevalent due to the overhang of the 2nd floor. The owner also stated that he had tried window film and it had NOT helped his heat gain problem. The temperatures were still very uncomfortable for his tenants, and the air conditioning costs were very high even though he had installed window tint/ film.

Approximately, one out of three (about 35%) of our customers have tried expensive window tint or film to no avail. After they have spent quite a large some of money on window tint/ film; and they find that it does not cut their energy bills, and their rooms are still uncomfortable - they call SunBlox to install solar screens on the exterior of their home or office to block the sun before it hits the glass. SunBlox prices are usually more cost effective than window tint/film companies. Bottom line is that solar window screens solve the heat gain and comfort issue while window tint/film does not address the issue of blocking the suns heat before it hits the glass!

The photos above depict before and after installation. The product used on these windows was Phifer Suntex 80 - black screen with bronze frame.
